Healthy
Fast Food Tips
Is it possible to go through
the drive-through or order from a menu where
you have to look up without feeling
guilty?
These healthy fast food tips
can help make it a healthy
experience
It is
important to realize that in the real
world, you are not always going to be able
to prepare 4-6 healthy meals each day. You
are also not going to have a stocked
cooler in the trunk of your car each time
you hit the road. Life happens and
unexpected events arise. The time will
come when you are hungry and your only
option will be a “fast food”
establishment.
You tell yourself that you
can’t go in there because of the diet you are
on. But your stomach continues to tell you
something different. A slight panic settles
over your body. Your brain starts to
rationalize with itself and it produces
thoughts like, “How bad can it really be?”
Well…. Make the wrong decision and it can be a
lot worse than bad; it can be HORRIBLE! Eating
just one poorly selected fast food meal can
pack enough calories, sodium and fat for an
entire day!

So, do you not eat or do you
go in and place a healthy (or healthier) order
with confidence? By having some healthy fast
food tips in your back pocket, you can be
assured that you are always making the best
possible decision. Remember, knowing which menu
choices are low calorie or high fat may not
always be so obvious. An innocent looking salad
can destroy you if it is covered in high fat
dressing along with a truck load portion of
artery clogging cheese and several dozen deep
fried croutons.
One of the easiest things
that you can do is to make sure you only go to
establishments that provide the nutritional
content of the items they are selling. Most
people have no idea how many calories are in so
many of these “fast” meals and if they did,
they would be shocked.
Studies have shown that
individuals, who take the time to look over the
nutritional content information, eat over 100
less calories than those that just order
without looking. Looking at this information is
not the norm and it is certainly something that
most of us are not used to doing. Behavior
changes take time but this is certainly one
change that is worth the effort.
If you are trying to lose
weight and/or burn fat, it is very important to
have this information. Calories play a central
role when it comes to your weight. The human
body uses something called your metabolism to
convert those calories into energy. If you give
your metabolism more calories than it needs,
that is when you start to see excess weight and
fat.
When you go to place your
order, do not be afraid of asking questions. If
the nutritional content information is not
available, one of the first things you should
always ask is how the food is cooked. Avoid
items that are deep fried or pan fried. Also
try and stay away from items that are batter
dipped. Thick and creamy sauces also usually
translate into astronomical calorie counts and
lots of unhealthy fat.
Another great habit to get
into is ordering naked. And no, get your head
out of the gutter; I am not talking about
clothing. I am talking about your food. Whether
it is a sandwich or a salad, avoid the dressing
(get it on the side) and go with no cheese or
spreads (like mayo). You can get great flavor
from ketchup and/or mustard; or my personal
favorite, hot sauce.
One thing I always try and do
is substitute unhealthy sides for something I
do not have to feel guilty about. If your meal
comes with fries or onion rings, find out if
you can have steamed veggies instead. Beans or
brown rice also make a great side substitute
when ordering an entrée.
Even though I do love them
while I am in Vegas, try and avoid going to
buffets. It is very difficult to find out the
nutritional content of foods there and it is
even harder finding out how different things
are cooked. Your chances of overeating also go
up dramatically in that type of
environment.
One of the easiest tips I can
think of revolves around your beverage. Make it
a habit to always drink water with your “fast”
food. These super sizes sodas have an
outrageous amount of sugar in them and it is so
easy to not realize how big some of those
beverage containers really are. One 32 oz
regular soda contains about 425 calories;
ouch!
Increasing pressure from many
different advocacy groups have made more and
more fast food establishments roll out lighter
menu options and healthier selections. If you
don’t see a ‘healthy’ or ‘light’ section on the
menu, be sure to ask if it is
available.
Portion size is also
something that can save you a ton of dollars,
calories, and pounds over time. Avoid upgrading
your meal to the next level of calories and
fat. You don’t need it! When you are starving
and up at the counter, it is very easy to be
sold on that decision, but resist the
temptation. Your eyes are almost always bigger
that your stomach. Go with the smallest portion
they offer and if you are still hungry after
you are done, you can always order
more.
Each time my husband and I go
to a restaurant, we split an appetizer and we
then only order one entrée. I can tell
you right now that 99% of the time, that is
more than enough and we almost never leave
feeling hungry.
