With obesity being the huge problem that it is today, we know that lifestyle and eating habits are the main culprit behind this epidemic. One of the best methods out there for reducing fat and losing weight is controlling your appetite. You need to start limiting the amount of food that goes in your mouth and increasing the quality of the food that does.

Today’s natural appetite suppressants are safer, more health conscious, more reliable and best of all, more honest. They are available in the form of natural supplements or whole foods. Natural appetite suppressants are much different than appetite suppressant drugs, which have many potential side effects and can be addicting. Natural suppressants help curb your appetite by using natural elements found in the food itself.

The Decline of Drugs

We all know that losing weight is not as easy as mass-media and large pharmaceuticals would lead you to believe. In talking with many individuals struggling with their weight, one recurring theme that keeps coming up is ‘appetite’ and ‘eating habits’. In a huge majority of the cases, most people with weight issues are eating much more than what their body needs to actually sustain itself. Perception is so important because I find that a lot of folks associate dieting and healthy eating with words like, ‘depravation’, ‘starvation’, ‘restriction’, ‘flavorless’ and ‘boring’. This is far from the truth. You can easily learn to control your appetite with natural suppressants and still eat great and have fun with your food choices. There are a lot of choices out that are effective at controlling your appetite and are also very filling and nutritious.

As more and more people are making their health and wellness the priority it should be, pharmaceutical and drug use is quickly waning. The appeal that many of these rising stars once had in the weight loss world is fading as more and more research exposes the damaging side effects many of these appetite suppressant and weight loss drugs have. Devastating side effects aside, one of the biggest problems with many of these drugs is that the results are temporary. As soon as the person stops using, the weight usually starts returning. The key is to develop lifelong habits and incorporate foods and routines you can sustain for years and not just weeks or months.

Herbs and Homeopathic

There are many individuals out there that resort to food in times of trouble or stress. This act is known as comfort eating and it is making and keeping way too many people overweight. In these situations, appetite control is essential. One readily available herbal antidepressant is St. Johns Wort. This well known and natural antidepressant can assist in balancing your bodies serotonin levels which in turn will increase your feeling of well being. When you feel good, that will help in preventing you from turning to food for comfort.

There are some other great remedies out there that act as natural suppressants and help control your appetite. Some examples include both Hoodia and Guarana (Paullinia Cupana). They have been shown to stimulate your metabolism and curb appetites. Another less known natural suppressant is Garcinia Cambogia. As far as appearance, it resembles a miniature pumpkin. If you wanted to find it in its natural habitat, you would need to travel to India and certain parts of Asia. An extract from this plant, known as hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is used in many weight loss products because it is supposed to suppress appetite and accelerate fat burning in the body. Some common homeopathic remedies used to naturally suppress appetites include calcium fluoride, calcium phosphate and kalium phosphate.

When purchasing any herbal or homeopathic remedies to help control your appetite, please be sure that your product is manufactured using the ‘Full Spectrum Method’. Simply stated, this ensures that that product is fresh, potent and safe.

Real Food

If you want to stay away from herbs and supplements and just want to focus on ‘real’ food, there are plenty of options available for you.

  • Pine Nuts: They are very high in protein and contain something called pinolenic acid. This naturally occurring fat helps stimulate hunger suppressing hormones in your body.
  • Green Leafy Vegetables (Salads): Some great examples are Spinach, lettuce and cabbage. They are high in fiber and this helps to slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. When this happens, you will not feel as hungry and you will eat less.
  • Apples: They are high in fiber, low in sugar and carbohydrates, they take a long time to chew and they are a natural anti-inflammatory. Eating a couple of these per day will certainly keep your appetite in check and prevent you from unnecessary snacking and over eating.
  • Green Tea: Not only is this beverage full of great antioxidants, it is also a great energy booster. Drinking 3-4 cups daily will keep you feeling full and moving and it will help to keep you away from the comfort food.
  • Flaxseeds: They are high in omega-3 fats and fiber. This combination prevents your blood sugar from rising too quickly and having this in control means having your appetite under control. Raw flaxseeds have also been shown to help lower cholesterol.
  • Oatmeal: This is my favorite breakfast food for many reasons. It is high in fiber and on the glycemic load scale, it is very low. That just means that after you consume it, you will feel full for a long period of time. This is great for controlling your hunger. Make sure you stick to the real stuff and not the instant kind.

Other Great Habits

On a final note, here are a few more suggestions that you can use to help control your appetite.

  • Exercise regularly: Exercising stimulates chemicals in your brain known as endorphins. Endorphins have been shown to reduce your appetite.
  • Do not miss breakfast: Missing this meal means you body will probably go 12-15 hours without food and this will slow your metabolism down. It is very difficult to burn fat and lose weight with a slow metabolism. Skipping breakfast also means you will snack more and binge when you do get a chance to eat.
  • Spice it up: Studies have shown that the more bland food is, the more people tend to eat.
  • Good old H2O: One of the easiest habits you can get into is increasing your daily consumption of water and making sure you drink a tall glass before each meal. You trick your brain into thinking your stomach is full and you are not adding any calories to your diet.
  • Dinner for two (or more): When you eat alone, you tend to eat more than when you know others are watching. If you have to eat alone, do it at the dinner table. Studies have shown that people who eat alone in front of a TV eat considerably more than those who eat at the table.

Get started with these habits and you will get your appetite under control.
