3 Day
Diet
Can a 3 day diet really
provide you with rapid weight loss, increased
amounts of energy, lower cholesterol and a
detox cleanse?
Safely?
The 3 Day
Diet is one of the few fad diets that has
withstood the test of time. And by "fad",
I mean that there is no real scientific
evidence behind whether it works or
not.
It has been in existence
since the mid 1980's and copies of this program
still continue to float around. The focus of
this program is quick weight loss rather
than safe (and maintainable) weight loss.
What is it
Even though this is not
correct, there are people out there that refer
to the 3 Day Diet as the Cleveland Clinic Diet.
The program is very strict and very regimented.
It must be followed to the letter for 3 days at
a time and after the 3 days, you return to a
"normal" diet for up to 4-5 days before doing
another 3 day cycle (if you chose).

you. A proven method that ignites your body's
fat burning hormones.
Advocates of the 3 day diet
claim that you can lose up to 10 pounds of
weight per cycle but I have serious doubts that
the weight being lost is fat. I also have
serious concerns about people being able to
keep the weight off long term. There is no
mention of exercise or fitness in this
program.
What Are You Supposed To
Eat
Like I mentioned earlier,
this program is very strict and regimented.
It's advocates claim that if you want to
achieve maximum weight loss, the portions
listed must be consumed exactly as listed. If
you are still hungry, the 3 day diet states
that you must not eat more and if you are not
hungry, you must still consume the
following
menu and portions:

The 3 day diet also states
that its followers consume 4 cups of water each
day or any drink with no calories.
For additional flavoring you
can add herbs, soy sauce, lemon, salt and
pepper, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard
and ketchup to your foods.
Science or Magic
So how exactly is it that
you lose all that weight in such a short period
of time? What is supposed to happen is that by
using this specific combination of food, your
body has a unique metabolic reaction which
supposedly causes it to burn fat.
What I have failed to find
is any kind of referenced material or
documentation that explains how this metabolic
reaction takes place and how fat burning is
initiated in your body.
I have also not been able to
locate any kind of explanation that covers the
so called increased energy levels, lower
cholesterol and detox that is also supposed to
occur with this diet.
It has been said that the 3
day diet can be performed as often as one would
like as long as you follow up each cycle with
4-5 days of normal food consumption. No where
is "normal" explained or outlined so if your
normal diet consists of fast food and deep
fried, that seems to be ok. I don't think
so!
My Opinion
STAY AWAY! Is that clear and
blunt enough? Claims that the diet works
because of a "unique metabolic reaction"
created by food combination are unfounded. I
see so many problems with a program like this
that I will just focus on the main issues.
First and foremost, This
diet does not advocate any kind or learning or
lifestyle change and that is absolutely
necessary if you want to lose weight and keep
it off. Most of the weight that is lost during
the 3 day diet can be attributed to water
weight. You are consuming very low levels of
carbohydrates and because of this, your body
retains much less water than it normally
does.
The 3-Day Diet is a perfect
example of something that is commonly referred
to as a "yo-yo" diet or fad diet. It never
educates the dieter on how to achieve
sustainable, healthy weight loss.
A plan like this provides
your body with around 1000 calories per day and
that is certainly not enough to maintain a
healthy metabolism. You will also have no fuel
to perform any kind of physical activity.
Lowering your caloric intake
and slowing your metabolism down for 3 days and
then reverting back to your normal diet will
likely cause you to regain the weight very
quickly. Chances are that you will also tend to
over eat on the days that are off the 3 day
cycle as your body wants to store as much as it
can before you put it through what amounts to a
starvation cycle.
The 3 day diet has nothing
to do with the Cleveland Clinic. As one of the
Directors from this prestigious clinic wisely
puts it, "It is an urban legend that is not
nutritionally sound, and the only reason it
causes weight loss is because it is so low in
calories, not because of any food combinations
or metabolic reactions."
Let me be clear one final
time... it is fads like this that give good
programs a bad name. When people inevitably
fail to lose and keep weight off, they blame
themselves when it fact, it is the diet that
needs to be blamed. Take the time to learn how
and why fat is burned and you will be able to
keep the weight off for a life time; not just 3
days.
